Waste Not, Want Not….Day 3
3. Light Pollution
I know that for many people, there is something alluring and beautiful about a city aglow. I’m not one of those people. Anytime I drive by an office complex or through a major city, all I can see is the draining of resources.
I understand that some of it might be necessary for a variety of reasons, but in a building that is entirely closed and vacant, why must every corridor and office space be lit up with ancillary lighting 24 hours a day, seven days a week?
There are billions of people in the world who go without the most basic of needs, while major corporations essentially build a bonfire and burn millions of dollars a day in useless electrical expenses.
4. Again, Turn Off the F*cking Lights!
My kids suck at this and I am constantly on them about it. Anytime they travel from one room to another….every….single….light along the way, must be turned on. Even in broad daylight.
It pains me, deeply, that while I have taught my children many things, I have apparently failed to teach them that the exact same mechanism that provides light, also has the power to extinguish it.
In the course of a day, I probably say, at least a 1,000 times….“Did you turn the lights off?”
More often than not, they didn’t.
When I was a kid, if we forgot to turn a light off in our house, my mother would punish us by making us stand at the light switch and turn it on and off until we collapsed from standing for so long and/or had a seizure.
Ordinarily, when it comes to parenting, I always think….WWMD (What Would Mom Do) and then immediately do the opposite, but I’m wondering if this one might be an effective teaching tool….it clearly worked for me.
5. Seriously, turn off the f*cking lights!
While we’re still on this topic, is artificial light really necessary when nature’s light bulb provides hours of natural light?
No. The answer is no.
P.S. You can only be reading this on a lighted electronic device….so you should really turn off the f*cking lights.
